Rapidly increasing populations and climate change are pressuring existing water sources, leading municipal and industrial users to seek new technologies for energy efficient recovery, recycling and treatment. Industrial and mining processes use large volumes of water and often place the contaminated water into large lagoons or tailings ponds for storage, slow evaporation or to await the development of new treatment technologies. Leakage from these lagoons or ponds into waterways can create serious problems.

Desalination is expensive - plants cost a lot to build and they are expensive to operate. Also, desalination typically requires large amounts of energy, emits GHGs and often produces a brine waste stream.
